Cooperative Coffees

Cooperative Coffees is a green coffee importer, owned by 23 roaster members across Canada and the USA, committed to building and supporting "Fair and Direct" trade relationships for the benefit of small-scale farmer families, their communities and exporting cooperatives, while promoting sustainable development alternatives in both the North and the South.

Statement of support

Since our founding in 1999, Cooperative Coffees has held true to its purpose -- to make trade a force for good. Today, collectively owned by 23 independent coffee roaster companies across Canada and the USA, we continue to: import high-quality, organic, green coffee exclusively from small-scale farmer organizations; build long-term and mutually beneficial trading relationships; and foster the highest caliber fair and equitable trading practices within the coffee industry. We celebrate the inclusive and unifying efforts of the Sustainable Coffee Challenge, and see our participation as a natural extension of our organizational mission. Supporting coffee farmers with access to knowledge and resources for sustainable production and trading practices, also supports our ultimate goal to make coffee-growing a sustainable and beneficial endeavor for farmer families and their communities in coffee-grower regions around the world.

Our Commitments

By the end of 2025, we expect to be carbon neutral and with the capacity to demonstrate how Cooperative Coffees administration teams and member roasters have successfully reduced our collective carbon footprints. Where complete reductions were not possible, we will have quantified and validated the documentation, illustrating where we have invested in carbon sequestration offsets within our supply chain in collaboration with our producer partners.

  • We will introduce and train coop representatives from at least five of our producer partners in three countries on the potential and proper application of the Cool Farm Tool to track their CO2 emissions and/or carbon sequestration in 2020.
  • By the end of 2021, we will have validated results on carbon sequestration for at least 250 producers from within our producer partner organizations, serving as a successful pilot project; and we will have offered up to US$100K in “environmental service” payments to regenerative organic farmers who have demonstrated, through the successfully application of the Cool Farm Tool in the fields, quantified levels of carbon sequestration.
  • By the end of 2022, we will have a plan to scale this carbon tracking work to all interested producer partners from within the Coop Coffees’ producer network, and to seek active collaboration from across all sectors of the Specialty Coffee industry and allied actors.
